THE SHELTER NEEDS YOU TO SAVE LIVES
After reaching capacity, the Humane Society of Central Texas is waiving adoption fees until Nov. 11.
WACO, Texas— The Humane Society of Central Texas has officially hit capacity after more than 100 animals were surrendered to the shelter. Animals who can’t find a home will have to be euthanized to make room.
However, many of these animals would make great pets. Nate Langley, a longtime volunteer, said he feels a special connection with many of the animals.
“I think it’s tragic that we could possibly have to put some of them down, simply because of lack of space,” Langley said.
According to CHRON, a report calculated 96,707 pets were killed in 2019 in Texas animal shelters due to lack of space. This is the reality for even more pets as the Coronavirus pandemic keeps people from adopting.
The Humane Society of Central Texas is waiving the adoption fee until Nov. 11 to encourage people in the community to adopt and save these pets lives. The shelter is also asking Wacoans to foster animals ranging from one week to three months.
“We know that everyone in Waco loves animals as much as we do,” Executive Director Dr. Paula Rivadeneira said. “We know they don’t want anything to happen to these animals. We

are so hopeful that our Waco community is going to come down today, help us save these animals.”
The shelter is requiring potential adopters to make an appointment via their website before coming to visit animals to maintain social distancing, due to a surge in coronavirus cases. However, adopters will be given a matchmaking interest form to ensure they are compatible with their new pet.
As the second wave of the pandemic approaches, this is the best time to adopt and foster a pet— they will be given the love and attention they deserve and customers will gain a quarantine buddy.
“I know many people have been hit hard by the current economic downturn in our community,” Langley said. “But I just beg my friends and fellow Wacoans to find it in their hearts to take care of these precious creatures.”
